Republic of Texas

When people talk about the history of Dallas, they may not be aware of that part of the history when  there was actually a Republic of Texas. The Republic of Texas was originally part of Mexico until it  declared its sovereignty in 1836. It remained the Republic of Texas until 1845. Disputes with Mexico as  to what the boundaries of Republic of Texas were led to the Mexican-American War.

Slavery

Not many people remember that the issue of slavery was key to the history of Dallas and Texas on the  whole, because many Anglo settlers in Texas were slaveholders who were adamantly against abolition of slavery. Back when Texas was part of the territory of Mexico, Mexico had already abolished slavery in  year 1829 but failed to implement that abolition. Colonists required slaves to be competitive at raising the  high value crop cotton. Mexico wanted colonists to raise other crops as it dictated.
